Red Sox Pitcher Set to Shock Fans on Opening Day Despite Doubts

In spring training, the Boston Red Sox are facing stiff competition as they finalize their pitching staff and bench roles for the upcoming season.

Despite ongoing speculation about potential additions like Jordan Montgomery, manager Alex Cora is proceeding with the assumption that no external help will arrive. This means evaluating an intriguing battle for the final rotation spot among Garrett Whitlock, Tanner Houck, and Josh Winckowski. Of the trio, Winckowski seems to be at a disadvantage, but he’s assured a spot on the roster, albeit with an unclear role.

Recent reports suggest Winckowski might not start the year in Triple-A as initially speculated. Instead, with the Red Sox’s demanding schedule early in the season, including a two-week stretch on the West Coast, Cora has hinted at the likelihood of using a sixth starter at times. Additionally, Cora mentioned that the two pitchers who miss out on the rotation spot battle will find themselves in the bullpen.

Last season, Winckowski demonstrated his capabilities with a 2.88 ERA across 84 1/3 innings, but his high batting average against and WHIP raise some questions about his overall performance. While there was some talk about Winckowski potentially starting in Triple-A, it seems unlikely given his impact on the team and the clubhouse’s internal dynamics. Nevertheless, he may not be the first choice for a rotation promotion due to some statistical concerns from last season, despite his generally positive contributions.
