NFL Analyst Suggests Bengals’ WR Tee Higgins Should Sit Out Playoffs to Protect Contract Interests

The Cincinnati Bengals are on the brink of a playoff berth, with one crucial divisional matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers standing in their way. Following their dramatic 30-24 overtime victory against the Denver Broncos, the Bengals remain in the postseason hunt with a chance to capitalize on a favorable schedule that includes games against the Kansas City Chiefs’ backups and a struggling New York Jets team.

However, NBC’s Pro Football Talk analyst Mike Florio has sparked controversy by suggesting that Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins should consider sitting out potential playoff games if Cincinnati clinches a spot. Florio’s argument is centered around financial prudence, urging Higgins to prioritize his long-term career over postseason glory.

Florio’s Argument: A Business Decision

In a Friday article, Florio highlighted the financial disparity between Higgins’ regular season earnings and the relatively modest compensation for playoff games. Having earned $21.8 million under the franchise tag this season, Higgins would receive a maximum of $348,000 for playing in four playoff games and winning the Super Bowl. Florio argued that this amount is not worth the potential risk of injury, especially with Higgins entering a contract year.

“From a business standpoint, it’s a no-brainer. Higgins should refuse to play without getting a new contract,” Florio wrote. “It’s a business decision. When owners make them, fans and some in the media applaud. When players make them, fans and some in the media find fault.”

Florio further suggested that Higgins could avoid public backlash by citing an injury as a reason for not participating, thereby protecting his reputation while avoiding direct conflict with the team.

Higgins’ Injury History and Contract Situation

Higgins has endured a challenging season, starting in only eight games and appearing in 11 due to various injuries sustained during practice. These lingering issues make the prospect of additional injury in the playoffs a significant concern. Florio contends that Higgins has more to lose than most players in similar situations.

Adding complexity to the situation is Higgins’ recent decision to part ways with agent David Mulugheta and hire Ja’Marr Chase’s agent, signaling his intent to negotiate a future with the Bengals. While this move suggests Higgins values his tenure in Cincinnati, Florio argues that sitting out could strain relationships within the organization.

Fan Reactions to Florio’s Take

Florio’s commentary has ignited a firestorm among fans, with many taking to social media to criticize his suggestion. Some accused the analyst of seeking attention with an outrageous opinion, while others dismissed the idea as unrealistic.

“Top-tier rage bait. Holy [expletive],” one fan tweeted.

“Your hatred of the Bengals is insufferable,” wrote another.

“It’s concerning that you are being serious,” another fan commented.

What’s Next for Higgins and the Bengals?

As the Bengals prepare for their pivotal matchup against the Steelers, all eyes will be on Higgins’ performance and any potential developments regarding his availability for the playoffs. While Florio’s suggestion has sparked debate, Higgins’ actions in the coming weeks will ultimately determine how his season—and his future—unfolds.
