“Michael Jordan Clears the Air: Setting the Record Straight on Larry Bird’s Place Among NBA Legends”
NBA dominance was how Michael Jordan and Larry Bird made their living. In their Hall of Fame careers, the two won a combined nine titles and eight MVP awards. They will always be remembered as two of the best players in history. Despite their respective accomplishments, Jordan and Bird were not seen in the same light. Bird was characterized as analytical and slow, whereas Jordan was the showy, high-scoring dunker. When it comes to ranking among the NBA’s all-time great players, Jordan is a lock. For many, he is the greatest of all time. It’s not necessarily a given that Bird will make that list, unless Jordan is the one creating it. Bird’s ranking among the best five players of all time was once explained by the former Bulls star. Michael A.
When Larry Bird and Magic Johnson joined the NBA for the 1979β80 season following their historic matchup in the 1979 NCAA menβs championship game, the league received much-needed support in the early 1980s. The NBA required a fire. During the 1970s, the league struggled with drug use, and Bird and Magic’s personal rivalry contributed to the league’s transformation. While Magic, appropriately enough, went to Hollywood with the Los Angeles Lakers, Bird took his talents to the Boston Celtics. Together, they helped revive a long-forgotten Celtics/Lakers rivalry that helped elevate the NBA to unprecedented heights.
Michael Jordan signed on a few years later, but not before Bird and Magic ignited the league. The star player from University of North Carolina was chosen by the Chicago Bulls with the third overall choice in 1984. Jordan created a lot of noise, even if Bird and Magic took center stage for the majority of the decade. His playoff performance in 1986 against Bird and the Celtics, scoring sixty-three points, was a precursor to things to come. Jordan was the NBA’s next big star after he patiently waited for the Bird vs. Magic rivalry to end in the early 1990s. The Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, won six titles in the 1990s, including two three-peats. Jordan ranked Bird as one of the five greatest NBA players of all time.
Bird was viewed by many, at least by basketball enthusiasts, as being unathletic and slow. That was untrue, as Bird’s former colleague Greg Kite stated to Sportscasting in 2021. “You hear it a lot, but it’s just wrong to say he wasn’t athletic,” Kite remarked. “Every NBA player is physically fit. He wasn’t quite as quick as some guys, but he was still a strong, competent athlete. He was swift enough and fast enough, yet all NBA players are physically gifted. In her book When the Game Was Ours, Jackie MacMullan noted that while Bird and Magic helped debunk some sports stereotypes, not all of them. Magic was one of the smartest players, but MacMullan said that he was never thought of as having a “high basketball game.”
Jordan concurred. According to MacMullan, he said, “Larry was a debate.” “He is still the same. Whenever I start to answer my all-time top five players, Larry comes along and gets in the way. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” they exclaim. He is unable to compete with LeBron James. “You guys don’t get it,” I tell them. than be honest, I’m still not sure if Larry is a power forward or a small forward, but he is significantly superior than any small forward that participated in the game. “Knowing the game is necessary in order to really appreciate Bird. To give him credit where credit is due, you have to be a basketball player. He isn’t leaving the gym right now. He never dunks on anybody. He doesn’t
