Ricky Thornton Jr. Claims 2024 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Championship

Eldora Speedway served as the stage for Ricky Thornton Jr.’s triumphant redemption in 2024. A year after a devastating setback at the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series finale, Thornton clinched his first national championship in commanding fashion, joining the elite ranks as the ninth different champion in the series’ 20-year history.

The 34-year-old driver capped his season with an impressive record: 14 victories, 34 top-five finishes, and 41 top-10 performances. Thorntonā€™s dominance throughout the season solidified his place at the top, securing the title by a 60-point margin.

The Championship Showdown

The Big River Steel Chase for the Championship presented by ARP introduced a five-race format this season. Thornton entered the finale at Eldora Speedway holding a 50-point lead, knowing a sixth-place finish or better would guarantee him the championship, even if closest competitors Jonathan Davenport or Devin Moran claimed the season-ending Dirt Track World Championship.

In the 100-lap feature, Thorntonā€™s consistent performance earned him a third-place finish, enough to seal the title. His victory was aided by misfortunes for his rivalsā€”Davenport retired with engine trouble on lap 64, while Moranā€™s remarkable charge from 18th on the grid ended with a fourth-place finish.

ā€œI feel like everyone kind of doubted us,ā€ Thornton remarked. ā€œComing into this playoff format, many didnā€™t see us as contenders. To come back and finish the season as champions is an incredible feeling. It took a lot of work and determination from my team, and weā€™re proud to come out on top.ā€
